Description
Monel K500
Material

UNS N05500, Alloy K-500, W.Nr. 2.4375, Monel® K-500
Note that the designation “ Monel®” is registered trademarks of Special Metals Corporation group of companies.

Overview

UNS N05500 is a precipitation hardenable, nickel-copper alloy, it has low magnetic permeability and strong non-magnetic characteristics over a wide range of temperatures, including subzero. The alloy has similar corrosion resistance to that of Monel 400, with the additional advantage of greater strength and hardness. In addition, the increased properties are obtained by adding aluminum and titanium to the nickel-copper base, and by heating under controlled conditions so that submicroscopic particles of Ni3 (Ti, Al) are precipitated throughout the matrix.

Application
  • Marine Service: Chains and cables, fasteners and springs
  • Chemical Processing: Pump and valve components
  • Paper Production: Doctor blades and scrapers for pulp processing
  • Oil and Gas: Oil well drill collars and instruments, pump shafts and impellers, non-magnetic housings, safety lifts and valves
  • Electronic Filed: Sensors and other electronic components

Corrosion Resistance

Monel K-500 has similar corrosion resistance to that of Monel 400, except that the alloy has a greater tendency toward stress-corrosion cracking in some environments when in the age-hardened condition. Also, Monel K-500 has been found to be resistant to a sour-gas environment. The combination of very low corrosion rates in highvelocity sea water and high strength make alloy K-500 particularly suitable for shafts of centrifugal pumps in marine service. In stagnant or slow-moving sea water, fouling may occur followed by pitting, but this pitting slows down after a fairly rapid initial attack.

Heat Treatment

Monel K-500 is a precipitation-hardened version of Monel 400, which offers higher strength and hardness. Heat treatment processes can be further enhance the mechanical properties of Monel K500. The solution treatment, also known as annealing, is the initial step in the heat treatment process for Monel K500, it aims to dissolve any precipitates present in the alloy and restore its single-phase structure. It is worth noting that Monel K500 can also undergo stress relief annealing, which involves heating the material to a temperature below the solution treatment temperature to relieve residual stresses. Stress relief annealing is usually performed after extensive cold working or welding to prevent stress corrosion cracking and maintain the material's mechanical properties.

Heating and Pickling

Heating Monel K500 is typically performed for hot forming or stress relieving purposes. The specific temperature and heating parameters will depend on the desired outcome and the application requirements.

Pickling is a standard method for producing a clean surface on Monel  K-500. After pickling, thoroughly rinse the Monel K500 component with clean water to remove any residual acid. Consider performing a passivation treatment to promote the formation of a protective oxide layer on the surface and enhance corrosion resistance.

Hot and Cold Forming

Hot Forming: Proper temperature during deformation is the most important factor in achievement of hot malleability. The hot-working temperature range is 1600° to 2100°F.  When hot working has been completed, or when it is necessary for Monel K-500 to cool before further hot working, it should not be allowed to cool in air but should be quenched from a temperature of 1450°F or higher. If the piece is allowed to cool slowly it will age-harden to some extent, and stress will be set up that may lead to thermal splitting or tearing during subsequent reheating.

Cold Forming: Monel k-500 an be cold-worked by standard procedures in the annealed condition. Although the alloy requires considerable power to form, it has excellent ductility. Unlike other materials, Monel K-500 increase in hardness with increasing cold work.

Machining

Heavy machining of Monel K-500 is best accomplished when the material is in the annealed condition or hot-worked and quenched condition. Age-hardened material, however, can be finish-machined to close tolerances and fine finishes. The recommended practice, therefore, is to machine slightly oversize, age-harden, then finish to size.

Welding

Monel K-500 products may be joined by conventional processes and procedures. Welding alloy K-500 is best accomplished by the gastungsten-arc welding (GTAW) process. MONEL filler metal 60 is normally used. However, the weldments are not age hardenable and, thus, do not have strength matching that of the hardened base metal.
