Overview
UNS N06075 is an 80/20 nickel-chromium alloy alloy with controlled additions of titanium and carbon. The alloy known for its high-temperature strength, corrosion resistance, and excellent mechanical properties, widely used in various fields. Today, it is mostly used for sheet applications calling for oxidation and scaling resistance coupled with medium strength at high operating temperatures. Also, Nimonic 75 is readily fabricated and welded.
Application
- Aerospace Industry: Gas turbine engines, combustion chambers, afterburners, and other hot sections where the material is exposed to high temperatures, oxidative environments, and mechanical stresses
- Chemical Processing: Heat exchangers, reactors, and catalyst systems that handle corrosive chemicals and high-temperature environments
- Automotive Industry: Exhaust valves, turbocharger components, and other parts subjected to extreme heat and corrosive conditions
- Nuclear Industry: Reactor core components, fuel elements, and other critical parts that require reliable performance at elevated temperatures and in corrosive environments
- Petrochemical Industry: Valves, fittings, and heat exchangers

Corrosion Resistance
Nimonic 75 is known for its excellent corrosion resistance in various environments. For example, Alloy 75 exhibits excellent oxidation resistance at high temperatures. It forms a protective oxide layer on the surface, which helps prevent further oxidation and degradation of the material. This makes it suitable for applications in high-temperature environments, such as gas turbines and aerospace components.
Heat Treatment
Nimonic 75 is a nickel-chromium alloy that can be heat treated to enhance its mechanical properties. It's important to note that specific heat treatment parameters, including temperatures, times, and cooling rates, may vary based on the material specifications, or specific application requirements. For exmple, bar cooling is done at 1050°C (1920°F) for 30-60 minutes followed by air cooling.
Heating and Pickling
Nimonic 75 can be heated and pickled to remove surface oxides and contaminants. First, Alloy 75 is heated to the range of 600-800°C (1112-1472°F) in a controlled atmosphere or under vacuum o promote oxide scale formation on the surface. Then, the alloy is subjected to a pickling treatment after the heating process, to remove the formed oxide scale and any other surface contaminant. The pickling solution is typically an acid-based solution, such as a mixture of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid, that can effectively dissolve the oxide layer. The specific composition and concentration of the pickling solution may vary depending on the desired results and the extent of the oxide scale.
Hot and Cold Forming
Hot Forming: Nimonic 75 can be hot worked in the range 1220-950°C (2230-1740°F).
Cold Forming: The good ductility and malleability of annealed Nimonic 75 make it amenable to many methods of cold deformation. The alloy is subject to rapid strain hardening. Because of this increased strength, large reductions can be made without rupture.
Machining
Nimonic 75 can be machined, but it is known to have poor machinability compared to some other alloys. The alloy is a high-strength nickel-chromium alloy with excellent high-temperature properties, which can make it challenging to machine. During machining, special attention needs to be paid to tool selection, cutting speed and feed rate, coolant and lubrication, rigidity and stability, post-Machining treatments etc,.
Welding
Nimonic 75 can be welded by the MMA, TIG, MIG and submerged-arc processes, and should be in the annealed condition before welding although a small amount of cold work is tolerable. The amount of permissible cold work varies with the component design but simple bending and rolling operations need not involve reannealing prior to welding. The affected zone produced in Alloy 75 does not introduce weld decay and post-weld heattreatment is not, normally, necessary. If equipment is required for service in contact with caustic soda, fluosilicates, or some mercury salts, a stress-relieving treatment could be desirable.
